How Do You Know It's Time?
Most people tolerate a sluggish computer far longer than they should. The inconvenience creeps up so gradually that it feels normal. These five warning signs are your computer's way of asking for help.
Sign 1: Slow Startup and Long Boot Times
A healthy computer should boot Windows or macOS in under 60 seconds on a solid-state drive, or around 2 minutes on an older mechanical hard drive. If you're waiting 5–10 minutes just to get to the desktop, something is wrong.
What causes slow startups?
- Too many startup programs: Every app you install tries to launch itself at startup. Over years, this list grows unmanageable.
- Fragmented or aging hard drive: Mechanical hard drives slow with age and fragmentation. Upgrading to an SSD can cut boot time dramatically.
- Malware: Some malware runs at startup and consumes resources before you've even opened a browser.
- Insufficient RAM: When Windows runs out of RAM, it compensates using much slower disk-based virtual memory.
What to do
Open Task Manager (Windows) → Startup tab, and disable programs you don't need at startup. If boot times are still slow after that, a professional tune-up can diagnose the root cause and resolve it.
Sign 2: Loud Fan Noise or Overheating
Your computer's fan runs faster when the processor gets hot. Occasional fan noise during heavy tasks is normal. But if the fan is constantly running at full speed, or your laptop gets too hot to touch comfortably, that's a warning.

Excess heat shortens the life of every component in your computer, especially the hard drive and graphics card. Chronic overheating causes random crashes, freezing, and in extreme cases, permanent hardware damage.
Common causes
- Dust buildup: Dust acts as insulation, trapping heat inside the case. Even laptops accumulate dust in vents over 1–2 years.
- Dried thermal paste: The paste between the CPU and its cooler dries out over time and loses effectiveness.
- Poor ventilation: Laptops set on soft surfaces (beds, couch cushions) block vents.
- Background processes: Malware or runaway software can peg the CPU at 100%, generating constant heat.
What to do
Use canned air to blow out vents. For laptops, a cooling pad helps. If the problem persists, a technician can open the case, remove dust buildup, and reapply thermal paste. This often drops temperatures 10–20°C.
Sign 3: Low Storage Space Warnings
Windows and macOS need free space to function properly, for temporary files, virtual memory, software updates, and crash dumps. When your drive fills past 85–90% capacity, performance drops noticeably.
Signs you're running low
- Windows shows a red bar on the C: drive in File Explorer
- macOS shows "Your disk is almost full" notifications
- Software updates fail to install
- Apps take much longer to save files or load
What to do

Sign 4: Frozen or Unresponsive Applications
Programs occasionally freeze, and that's normal. But if apps regularly freeze, take forever to open, or crash mid-task, your computer is struggling.
What's usually causing it
- Insufficient RAM: When RAM is maxed out, apps wait in a queue for memory. Modern Windows needs at least 8 GB; 16 GB is better for multitasking.
- Hard drive failure: A failing drive can't read data fast enough, causing apps to hang while waiting.
- Outdated drivers: Old graphics drivers in particular cause display applications and browsers to crash.
- Malware: Background processes consuming CPU and RAM leave nothing for your actual applications.
What to do

Sign 5: Updates Failing or Being Skipped
Windows Update, macOS updates, and software patches exist for good reason: they fix security vulnerabilities and performance bugs. If updates are constantly failing, that's both a symptom and a cause of further problems.
Why updates fail
- Low disk space: Updates need room to download and unpack. A full drive prevents installation.
- Corrupted system files: Damaged Windows or macOS files prevent updates from completing.
- Malware blocking updates: Some malware deliberately disables Windows Update to prevent security fixes that would detect or remove it.
- Outdated hardware: Very old computers may no longer support the latest OS versions.
What to do
Free up disk space first (our disk space guide explains how). Restart the computer and try again. If updates still fail repeatedly, run Windows' built-in System File Checker (sfc /scannow in an administrator command prompt) or take it to a professional.
