Getting a new printer talking to your network
Most wireless printers want to join your home Wi-Fi during setup, but the steps are rarely as simple as the box makes them sound. Some printers need their own screen menu walked through first, others want an app installed on your phone before they will even see the network.
We connect the printer to your Wi-Fi, install it on every computer and laptop in the house that needs to print to it, and test a real page from each one before we leave. If your printer also scans, we set that up too.
Scanning to email or a folder on your computer
A lot of printers can scan a document and email it to you, or drop it straight into a folder on your computer, but the settings for this are usually buried three menus deep and worded in a confusing way. We set this up once so you just press one button on the printer from then on.
- Scan-to-email set up with the address you actually use
- Scan-to-folder pointed at a place on your computer you can find
- One-button scanning tested with a real document before we leave
Why printers keep dropping offline
The most common complaint we hear is not the initial setup, it is a printer that worked fine for months and then suddenly shows "offline" again. Usually the printer picked up a new address on your network and your computer is still looking for the old one, or a router update reset something quietly in the background.
- Printer shows offline even though it is powered on
- Printer works from one computer but not another
- Print jobs pile up in the queue and never print
- Wi-Fi password changed and the printer never reconnected
